It’s at this time of year that many think about this one question. If he was God why didn’t he save himself? What good did dying as a martyr do for me? What was the point? Didn’t it just prove his own mortality?
I spent almost all of Good Friday in church. Whether it was in the town centre openly praising Jesus for his sacrifice or in church showing gratitude that he did this for me. But one thing I am sure of is that Jesus did need to die for me. The consequence of sin is death. Whenever there is sin blood must be shed to pay the price. Before Jesus died and came back to life people were required to slaughter their best animals and offer them to God as an atonement for all their wrong doing. Now this is not just actions, but thoughts and attitudes as well. God always looks at the heart so there is no hiding our sin from Him.
When God created Adam and Eve they were created for heaven. But they chose sin and so we are now born with this sin nature, but…we still have a choice. Every single person on earth has a chance to chose heaven. Believing that we can live our lives our way, try our best to be good and die and go to a special place is a deceiving ignorance that disillusions us out of heaven. We have to chose to believe and follow Jesus Christ. We can’t just skip along a path we think is best. We must chose the only path that leads to heavens gates. And there is only one path – Jesus Christ.*
Does that sound scary?? Well now you may start to understand why we need Jesus. We need to have our sin cancelled by someone’s death. And have you noticed we’re not slaughtering animals in our back gardens and burning incense and praying for days to ask God for forgiveness?? That’s because of Jesus’ death.
I don’t know about you, but I have a long list of sin that needs to be paid for. I am so thankful that Jesus chose to die so that I don’t have to live under a long list of rules and regulations, or in fear of his wrath, or continually kill animals in order to be forgiven. Because Jesus’ blood covers all sin forever and ever I can now be forgiven simply by asking him, I can live in heaven simply by believing in him and I am set free, redeemed, restored, healed, saved and made whole and right before God so that I can enter heaven for eternity.
That is why Jesus needed to die, why he chose it freely and conquered satan and death and lives in heaven now. He did it so that we didn’t have to die. He did it because he loves us.
If you haven’t accepted Jesus’ love in your life just know that he died for you too. He wants everyone to be part of his family and live in his house (heaven) forever. He is a God of love and he loves you just the way you are.
“For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
